Swimming Pool Repair & Renovation

Common Fixes and Touchups
Pools in Oklahoma have a lot to contend with. Our state is known for everything from relentless freeze/thaw cycles and massive shifts in temperature to severe weather, hail and more – and your pool and spa are outside for all of it. So, it’s to be expected that your pool and its equipment might occasionally need some attention.
Pools and Spas by Design is happy to inspect, diagnose and repair problems with your pool – whether we installed it or not.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I automate my pool equipment?
Yes! Smart pool automation systems allow you to control pumps, heaters, lights and water features from your phone or tablet.
Why isn’t my saltwater pool generating chlorine?
Possible causes include a dirty salt cell, incorrect salt levels, a failing cell, or low water temperature.
How often should I clean my salt cell?
You should clean it every 3-6 months, or when calcium buildup is visible on the plates.
What’s the ideal pH and chlorine level for my pool?
pH: 7.2 – 7.6
Chlorine: 1-3 ppm (parts per million).
How do I know if my pool equipment needs repair or replacement?
Signs include unusual noises, reduced water circulation, frequent pump shut-offs, cloudy water despite proper chemicals, or leaks near equipment.
How often should I service my pool equipment?
Pool equipment should be inspected and serviced at least once a year. However, filters should be cleaned every few months and pumps should be checked regularly for leaks or wear.
Why is my pool pump not turning on?
Possible reasons include a tripped breaker, loose wiring, a failed motor, or a clogged impeller. Checking the power supply and filter baskets can help diagnose the issue.
Why is my pool pump making loud noises?
A whining or grinding noise could indicate a failing motor bearing, cavitation from low water levels, or debris stuck in the impeller.
How long should I run my pool pump each day?
Depending on the pool size, climate and season, most Oklahoma pools require 6-12 hours of daily circulation.
Why is my pool filter not cleaning the water properly?
A clogged filter, broken internal components, or incorrect backwashing can reduce efficiency. Regular cleaning and filter replacements will help maintain water clarity.
How often should I replace my pool filter?
Replace sand filters every 5-7 years.
Replace cartridge filters every 2-3 years.
DE Filter grids last 5-10 years with proper maintenance.
Why is my pool filter pressure too high?
A dirty filter, clogged return lines, or a malfunctioning pressure gauge could be the cause. Backwashing or replacing the filter cartridge often helps.
Why is my pool water green?
Green pool water is usually caused by algae growth, poor filtration, low chlorine levels, or imbalanced pool chemistry.
How do I get my green pool back to blue?
To clear a green pool, shock the water with high levels of chlorine, brush and vacuum the pool and run the filter continuously.
How long does it take to turn a green pool blue?
With proper chemical treatment, filtration and cleaning, it can take anywhere from 24 hours to a few days to get your pool back to a deep, beautiful blue.
How can I prevent my pool from turning green again?
Maintain proper chlorine levels, regularly test water chemistry, clean the filter and use an algaecide as a preventative. We also have pool maintenance companies we are happy to recommend.
Does my pool filter need extra cleaning after algae removal?
Yes, after treating algae, clean or replace the filter to prevent recontamination.
What is the ideal chlorine level to prevent algae growth?
Chlorine levels should be maintained between 1-3 ppm (parts per million) to prevent algae growth.
